Kenmare

The elegant town of Kenmare is situated in the most westerly corner of Europe. It is warmed by the Gulf Stream and the South Westerlies. Its mild climate is echoed in the warmth and friendliness of its people.

Kenmare combines old world charm with award-winning restaurants, hotels and guesthouses. Shops are unique and varied, stocking the best of local crafts including pottery, jewelry and knitwear.

The famous Kenmare Needlepoint Lace was developed into an industry by the Poor Clare Nuns in the 1860s and is still made in the town.

A national Tidy Towns award winner, Kenmare is a "planned town", designed by Sir William Petty in 1761, and has recently been given Heritage Town status.

The town is also known as "Neidín" (meaning "little nest"), nestling as it does among the green hills of Kerry. The hinterland of Kenmare provides a feast of fishing, game hunting, hill walking and is a haven for the landscape artist.
